Noayama lets the edges fray on Caravanist’s Shattered Dreams

Caravanist’s Shattered Dreams keeps things tight: five tracks from Noayama, the 24-year-old producer, media artist and filmmaker currently based in Vienna, built around dirty beat structures, lo-fi texture and a fair amount of distortion. It lands on Affine Records in a zone that feels more bruised than polished, with the club suggested through pressure and movement rather than straight function.

The strongest moments come from how unstable the EP lets itself be. Fragments of speech, rough rhythmic edits and grainy low-end give the record a restless shape, while the rap features pull it further from any clean beat-tape lane. Queens artist Deem Spencer and Washington, D.C.’s NAPPYNAPPA appear on “Don’t Had To Know” and “BBQ RAVE,” adding different shades of introspection and looseness to music that already sounds half-submerged, half-wired.

There is an escapist angle here, but not the glossy kind. Noayama’s version is scuffed, compact and slightly disorienting, closer to a late-night detour through leftfield beat music than a big-room release.
