Derek Kamm draws on over two decades of electronic music experience for a four-track release that brings deep, minimal and micro house together with the creative identity of his Mad Motel label.

With the release of “Mad Motel 004,” DJ, producer and visual artist Derek Kamm, better known as KidIsLive, presents another chapter in his longstanding career in electronic music. Released October 2, 2026, on vinyl and digital, the four-track EP reflects the musical versatility and independent artistic direction that have become central to his work.

Over the past twenty years, Kamm has established a distinctive production style informed by deep house, minimal and micro house, incorporating elements of each without limiting himself to a particular genre. His catalog includes releases through Visionquest and 8 Head Records, while appearances on international stages have contributed to an evolving musical perspective shaped by different audiences and environments.

Much of that individuality is reflected in Mad Motel, the independent record label Kamm founded to accommodate both his musical productions and his passion for visual art. He takes a hands-on approach to the imprint’s creative presentation, personally painting and designing the artwork accompanying its releases. Through this combination, the label maintains an identity that extends beyond the music itself, connecting its visual and sonic elements within a shared artistic concept.

Another significant influence on Kamm’s life and career comes from his enduring ties to Brazil.

His family connection to the country dates back to his mother’s upbringing in Ipiaú, Bahia, and his parents’ meeting at Carnival in Rio de Janeiro in 1976. Although born in San Diego in 1981 and raised on Long Island, Kamm has remained closely connected to Brazil through relatives and friendships throughout the country. His wife, who is originally from Curitiba, further strengthens those personal ties.

Brazil has also played a direct role in his development as a DJ. During 2010, Kamm spent time living in Rio de Janeiro, participating in the local underground dance music community and performing at parties throughout the city. His involvement in the scene led to a performance at Burn Intense Music Festival in Goiânia, appearing alongside artists such as Gustavo Bravetti and Toca Disco.

These experiences form part of the international background Kamm brings to his latest project, which explores four different expressions of house music.

“DSCR” introduces the EP through an interplay of bright melodic passages, swirling synthesizers and a relaxed house rhythm characterized by its shuffling percussion. The second track, “ETA ETC,” takes a more textured direction, weaving processed vocal elements into atmospheric layers and dubby beats influenced by the early French touch sound. Detailed percussion and rhythmic variations add a lively dimension to the arrangement.

The energy becomes more restrained and nocturnal on “Jacks Feedback,” where layered grooves meet glowing synthesizer tones and spacious, cosmic sound design. By contrast, closing production “He’s Too Tough” emphasizes a more direct dancefloor sensibility, combining forceful drums, melodic female vocals, a prominent bassline and carefully developed synth arrangements.

While each composition explores a different mood, the four tracks share the spontaneous, characterful production approach associated with KidIsLive. The result is a release that demonstrates the breadth of Kamm’s musical interests while remaining consistent with the independent vision guiding Mad Motel.

“Mad Motel 004” represents another step in Kamm’s continuing creative development, bringing together his experience in underground electronic music, his involvement in visual art and the international influences accumulated throughout his career. From his early life in the United States to his personal and professional experiences in Brazil, those connections remain part of the artistic identity he continues to develop through KidIsLive and Mad Motel.
