Scarper Unearths Hidden Electronic Gems on Off-Cuts (2014–2021)
A vibrant archive of unreleased house, techno and electronica from one of the UK underground’s most distinctive independent voices.
Some tracks are made for a specific release. Others wait patiently for the right moment.
For UK producer Steve “Scarper” Young, that moment has arrived with Off-Cuts (2014–2021) — an inspired collection of eight previously unreleased productions created during the same fertile period that delivered his acclaimed debut album Warmer Squares and the enduring dancefloor favourite, “E-Funk.”
Far from being an afterthought, Off-Cuts (2014–2021) offers a fascinating look into Scarper’s creative process. Drawn from studio archives, the project gathers demos, jams and overlooked ideas that have now been carefully revisited, refined and given the space they deserve. It is a snapshot of an artist moving freely through house, techno, acid and melodic electronica — unrestricted by trend, format or expectation.
The release begins with the cinematic impact of “Skynet,” where sweeping, emotional chords create an immediate sense of scale. From there, Scarper shifts gears with the acid-flecked energy of “Steppe,” a playful, squelching excursion built for adventurous dancefloors. “Halocline” takes a more delicate path, unfolding with lush strings and melodic warmth that underline Scarper’s ability to craft music with both club function and genuine feeling.
“I realised I had quite a few demos, jams & ideas on my laptop from that period, some of which were decent enough to polish up & get out into the world,” Scarper says. “It’s a snapshot of where I was musically at the time, so I thought I’d package them together as a retrospective rather than a proper release — giving people something to enjoy while I crack on with the next project.”
That approach makes Off-Cuts (2014–2021) feel refreshingly human. These are not tracks forced into a formula; they are moments preserved from a creatively charged era, now presented with care and purpose. The collection moves between moods and tempos while retaining a clear identity: colourful, soulful, exploratory and deeply rooted in electronic music culture.
Scarper’s reputation has been built on precisely this kind of versatility. His work has previously attracted support from pioneering figures including Orbital, Laurent Garnier and Carl Craig, while radio plays on Rinse FM, Sub FM and BBC 6 Music have helped introduce his sound to audiences well beyond his UK base. Press support from Mixmag, DJ Mag and XLR8R further cemented the impact of Warmer Squares, a debut that received widespread critical acclaim.
Meanwhile, Scarper’s 2020 track “E-Funk” continues to find a new generation of listeners, with its resurgence boosted by a recent physical release. That renewed attention makes Off-Cuts (2014–2021) especially timely: an opportunity to explore the wider sonic universe surrounding one of his most recognised records.
As an artist releasing almost exclusively via his own Plexus Records label, Scarper represents the spirit of true independence. His music is guided by instinct rather than industry pressure, allowing melodic beauty, raw groove, classic rave energy and contemporary sound design to coexist naturally.
Off-Cuts (2014–2021) is a reminder that great ideas do not expire. In Scarper’s hands, these once-unheard productions become a compelling retrospective — and an exciting signal that there is still plenty more to come.
